Coaching for sustainability professionals

Empowering active hope and resilience in the face of the climate and ecological crisis

Supporting the wellbeing and resilience of those working in the crucial areas of the climate, environment, and sustainability

How can those working in the crucial areas of the climate, environment and sustainability find support? What are the impacts if these key people feel isolated, overwhelmed by the scale of the challenge, or that their actions accomplish too little, too late?

Although there has been more focus on well-being and support for those in high-pressure jobs where limited resources, deadlines, and excessive hours can result in high levels of stress, exhaustion, and burnout, it is essential that there is ongoing investment in the people giving their lives to the greatest challenges of our time.

For those working in the crucial areas of the climate, environment, and sustainability, thank you for your actions and work. Find a support network that helps to sustain you, be that a community group, friend, family, mentor, or coach. You are not alone in this work. The global community of those creating ways to transition to a way in which live and work in harmony with our world and one another continues to strengthen.

If you are an employer, I encourage you to take an honest look at your business model and culture. It is vital that businesses invest in the interests of the well-being and support of their people. Honesty and transparency must be prioritised over carefully crafted corporate mission statements. Improving the quality of communication, listening, feedback, and relationships between leaders and teams, and management is important. Remember your people are key to the future of your business. Supporting them now just might be the most important thing you ever do.

I am delighted to be part of The Climate Coaching Alliance, a global community of diverse coaches, coaching psychologists, coaching supervisors, facilitators, and other leadership professionals, who work with individuals, leaders and their teams, community leaders and change-makers to support viable, inclusive practices to maintain a flourishing planet for future generations.

I have an extensive understanding of the construction industry, working with sustainability and construction professionals, directors, executives, and management teams, ranging from international businesses, SMEs and owner-managed businesses.

Over the last 30 years, I have worked with more than 40 businesses within the construction sector, and understand the specific challenges this sector faces. I have helped business leaders in construction achieve success, acting as their Partner of Trust, someone they can confide in and can help them to achieve courageous goals, and to work through key barriers and areas of challenge, to attain transformational change.

Clients include businesses across the complete built environment, from design and construction, through to building materials manufacture and supply, and building services and maintenance.

    How it works…

Coaching is not limited to the knowledge and expertise of the coach, it isn’t about imparting skills and expertise or training. It is all about you, about understanding you, your goals, ambitions, fears, concerns, challenges, and unlocking your full potential.

The key stages in the executive coaching process include:

Initial meeting – to understand your individual needs and goals, what is coaching, the process, and how it can help.

Identifying individual objectives – explore and identify the desired goals and outcomes of the coaching. Where appropriate the individual’s manager can be included in a three-way meeting.

Coaching structure – a flexible structure to suit the needs of the individual to clarify format, frequency, progress and evaluation. Understanding the role of the coach and the role of the coachee.

Confidentiality and code of ethics – all coaching is confidential and will be provided in line with the International Coach Federation Professional Code of Ethics.

Review and Evaluation – a clear process for review and evaluation will be agreed with the coachee at the outset to ensure continual progress towards the desired outcomes and goals.
