From the Latin “co-suffering”. In coaching, we would speak of empathy, the capacity to feel what others are feeling. During this crisis we are all very much in this together, everyone is affected in some way, and everyone can make a difference by our actions and approach.
Previously we elevated words like competitive which already creates a perception of us and them, in marketing terms differentiation is key, again suggesting a focus on our differences. Whilst these concepts will continue and are not to be seen as negative, it is in the celebration of our differences that we can achieve a better world, a better team, and be a better business.
Leadership which starts from a place of compassion and empathy will embrace active listening, with a genuine interest in what others have to say, think or feel. Inviting feedback and providing regular check-in and check-out opportunities when working remotely. Where compassion is practiced it will lead to increased loyalty and retention of employees and talent. Compassion demonstrates a genuine interest in the well-being of others (our employees, our colleagues, our team) and can lead to a reduction in stress, allowing individuals to respond and act from a better place, enabling improved cooperation and performance.
